Our English Curriculum has a clear structure for children to learn how to develop their spoken language, understanding and comprehension into written work. We follow the ‘Read to Write’ Scheme to teach writing, which uses rich texts to develop the skills needed to become successful.
‘Read to Write’ empowers teachers to provide high-quality teaching of writing through children’s high-quality literature (Vehicle Texts). The units of work centre on engaging, vocabulary-rich texts, with a wealth of writing opportunities. Several of these carefully selected Vehicle Texts have strong thematic links to Science, History and Geography.
We use the highly structured and rigorous ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics programme to teach children to read and to provide any necessary interventions up to Year 4. In Years 5 and 6, we use the ‘Fresh Start’ programme to support any children who are not yet reading fluently. As well as teaching the necessary decoding skills, we regularly assess children’s reading and move their groups based on attainment.
Reading:Steps to Read
We teach whole class reading through the ‘Steps to Read’ scheme. ‘Steps to Read’ provides a clear teaching sequence to reading sessions that explicitly teach reading skills and strategies in a cumulative way through evidence-based approaches.
